Stock Up On Meditation Cushions!

If you’re looking for meditation cushions to sell in your store, or for your meditation center, we can help!  Our meditation cushion covers are made with a durable 12oz. (100% cotton) canvas, in your choice of 35 different colors, with a minimum order of only 10 pieces total, 5 per color!  The Zafu’s & Zabuton’s we sell are available as either a shell (to be stuffed), or zippered cover (to fit over an existing cushion).  Zafu’s can be ordered in traditional style (with pleats), in “Pillbox” style (without pleats), or in “Half Moon Crescent” shape.  And our gomden style meditation cushion covers are available in full size (13″ x 18″ x 6″ high), or half size (13″x 18″ x 3″)  All the Zafu’s and Gomden’s we sell can be ordered in a single color or two-tone pattern (as shown below).

These are perfect for re-covering old, worn out cushions that you already have at your meditation center.  If you have a store and you want to cut down on costs, you can order the covers from us and then fill them yourself to save on the cost of shipping the batting/filler material.

Most zafu and zabuton cushions are filled with cotton or kapok batting, which can be purchased at local craft or fabric supply stores.  Zafu meditation cushions are also sometimes filled with buckwheat hulls, which can easily be inserted to fill your cushions.  Zabutons can also be made (filled) with felt pads instead of cotton or kapok batting.  We recomend using two inches of felt padding to make sure it’s thick enough to provide a soft base to protect people’s knees and ankles when they sit on them.  Gomden style meditation cushions are usually filled with rebonded foam, and often have a thin pad of soft foam on the top to provide a soft surface area with an excellent, firm base.  Rebonded foam is quite heavy, however.  Recently we’ve also seen good quality industrial strength (firm and durable) hard “foam” available, which provides a lighter (weight) alternative for filling your gomden style cushions.

The market trend dubbed retailpocalypse is transpiring at an alarming rate as we head in to May 2018, and the retail casualties are piling up.  Meahwhile, interest in meditation and yoga is still growing rapidly.  The inspiring, stylish design details that adorn the places where people go to chill out—like meditation and yoga studios, are  adorning living rooms, and are as poplular as ever in fashion. According to Wikipedia, the main factor cited in the closing of retail stores in the retail apocalypse is the shift in consumer habits towards online commerce. While the retail trend shifts from brick-and-mortar shops to online sales, not all types of shops are closing.  While Toy’s R Us just closed all 735 of its U.S. stores, Build-A-Bear Workshop remained as the only major toy retailer surviving the retail apocalypse.  Could it be that shops that offer more tailored, customized products are in a better positon to thrive?  We believe that this is a time for differentiation and standing out in the market if there ever was one.  Are you taking steps to set yourself apart?

At Great Eastern Imports, we’re here to help with a solution:  Custom products that we can deliver to you with low MOQ’s, and quick turn-around times.

Mala Fashion Trending in 2017

The huge surge in the popularity of yoga and meditation over the past few years seems to have increased the popularity of malas in general, so much that the mala tassel has even taken on a life of its own!  Tassels are all the rage… on malas, wrist malas, and even just by themselves!  Tassels on earrings, tassels on necklace chains, tassels on tassels on tassels.  Ha ha.  No joke  We’ve seen multi-tassel necklaces just on a chain.  There’s just a huge resurgence in demand for tassels on everything in jewelry lately.  Maybe it’s connected to the “dream catcher” motif.  Tassels; they’re like a feather for jewelry!

Matte Amazonite wrist mala with Gold Sandstone & etched brass accents

Remember that post we wrote back in January 2013, “Brass is Back“?  Yeah, well it’s truer now than ever… told ya so!  Now we’re seeing a huge popularity with the mixing of metal beads in with stone, wood, and seed beads. We’re getting lots of requests for malas with silver plated pewter accent beads, brass accent beads, and gold-plated brass.

Another trend is matte beads.  Everything matte is popular right now. Matte Crystal, matte onyx, matte sardonyx agate, and matte fire agate are the most common.  Lava rock qualifies in the matte category, and it’s still very popular!  Faceted beads are still popular as well, but that contrast is where it’s at.

Then there’s Druzzy Agate;  You’re own personal jewelry Geode.  We put up a line of druzzy agate beads on our malas & wrist malas page a few months ago, and those are also increasing in popularity. Druzzy agate is like a matte and faceted bead all rolled up in one with their crystal geode inclusions!  Those geodes are also becoming a focal point of necklace pendants, and bracelets as well.  It’s a new addition to the wrist game bling, matte vs. shiny match.

The King of Bling; pavé set beads with CZ’s or gemstones in them is really mainstream.  Thank goodness people are opting out of the clay “shamballa” beads that have crystals glued onto them.  Those are really tacky, and the crystals fall off easily.  The wide-spread production of metal (brass or pewter) beads with micro pavé set stones on them has driven the prices down to where it’s now more common to see these than the clay & glue version that were all over the place a few years ago.

Last but not least, is wood and seed beads.  Rudraksha seed beads became the rage after that Julia Roberts movie, Eat, Pray, Love a few years ago.  When it came to malas, basically it was Rosewood, Sandalwood, Bodhi Seed, Lotus Seed and Rudraksha, and that was it.  Now people are looking for other options.  We’re seeing a huge surge in popularity in many other types of wood beads including Ebony wood, Palm wood, Bayong wood, Robles wood and Coconut Shell beads.  Now we’re also looking at a few new types of wood beads, including Jackfruit wood, White wood, and a light pink colored Philippine Rosewood!

Brass is Back!

Brass is back… believe it or not!  Gold and silver will always have their place among the greats when it comes to materials for making  jewelry, but coming up strong in 3rd place as a contender, is Brass!  We’ve seen a surge in sales, and in the publicity of brass jewelry recently.  I guess it’s the look of  “simplicity” that’s popular these days, echoed in the world of jewelry/fashion as simple elegance; probably in part due to the prominence of Eastern religion (and it’s symbols) due to the popularity of yoga and meditation in the West.

Take a look at some of our (wholesale) sacred symbols brass jewelry, which are available in yellow or white color brass, and can be custom ordered in silver or gold plated.  Details and prices for ordering are on our website at http://www.greateasternimports.com/SacredSymbolsJewelry.html.  Email or call if you have questions!
